Never My Soul Mate, Always My Soul

by Strausser

This poem is dedicated to the only man I've ever loved.

I. The Time Before

In a dark place of nothing
There is a light
On an empty road of desperation
There is a light
When a cry of pain is heard
Louder than explosions of terror
There is a light
Walls crumble to shattered remains of hope
Yet, there is a light
Through mountains and valleys
And rivers and streams
There is a light that burns hot fire
In solitary with nothing to go back to
A light is shining like the North Star
Remains of the dead pile at feet
There is nowhere to go, to run away to
Feeling the emptiness crawl like scorpions
There is a light
When God turns His back
To misery and tears
There is a light to find
To follow without pause
That light is you
That pain is me
You lift me from a gray fog
To set me down in green pasture
Touch my face with words and kiss
My fears run away, gone forever
For the light is my soul
You are my essence
You are my light.
